South County, Rhode Island Visitors Guide
Rhode Island's South County is comprised of 11 towns - Charlestown Coventry, East Greenwich, Exeter, Hopkinton, Narragansett, North Kingstown, Richmond, South Kingstown, Westerly and West-Greenwich. These New England towns make up Rhode Island's largest tourism region. You will see farms that have been passed down from generation to generation, waves crashing on the seashore and numerous other scenic vistas. There are antique shops, art galleries, and theaters to rejuvenate your mind, body and soul. If you love to learn about culture of the American Indians, then spend some time in Charlestown visiting the Narragansett Indian meeting house or the Royal Indian Burial Ground. For hiking and assorted outdoor fun visit the Kettle Pond Visitor Center, or Ninigret Park.
Coventry offers the General Nathanael Green Homestead, the Paine house which is used by the historical society, golfing and other outdoor adventures at Nicholas Farm.
For more history spend some time in East Greenwich's Varnuum House museum, the Varnum armory and the New England Wireless and Steam Museum.
In Narragansett you can enjoy family fun at Adventure Land as you play miniature golf, ride the bumper boats or practice your swing in the batting cages. If hiking and exploration is what you love, then plan on spending some time at Canonchet Farm Park, Fisherman's Memorial State Park, the Wildlife Refuge at Pettaquamscutt Cove, the Kinney Bungalow at Sunset Farm or Narragansett Indian Monument. Additional area attractions are Point Judith Coast Guard Station, Point Judith Lighthouse, and South County Museum and for high sea excitement book a place on Frances Fleet for fishing and whale watching adventure.
The town of North Kingston offers learning adventures at Casey Farm, Davis Memorial Wildlife refuge, the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace, Smith Castle and Wickford Village. You can stretch your legs at the Wilson rock bikeway, cast a line at the Lafayette Trout Hatchery, or tour the Quonset Aviation Museum.
Westerly offers wet and wild fun at Water-Wize, Atlantic Beach Park, Miswuamicut State beach and Napatoe point. Fun of historic significance is at Wilcox Park, the Babcock-Smith House or Flying Horse Merry go round.
In West Greenwich you will find attractions like stepping stone ranch, bug river management Area, Leyden's Tree Farm, Wickaboxet Management area and stepping stone falls.
The South Kingstown area has a wide variety of attractions. Fayer-Weather House, Kingston Station and Village and the Watson House; Sporting fun at Bradford R. Boss Arena and the Ryan center; Performing and cultural art at Fine Arts Center Galleries, Helmet House, The Museum of Primitive Art and Culture; outdoor areas like the Great Swamp Management Area, Kenyan Cornmeal Co, Hannah Robinson Rock and Tower.
